The Center for Online Learning provides training in a number of formats to help instructors find the support they need when they need it. We provide technical training on how to use campus systems like Isidore, Warpwire, and Zoom, but also pedagogical training that helps instructors advance their teaching and learning skills. This page will be updated often with additional training opportunities as they are scheduled.

Teaching with the Power of Stories (In-Person and via Zoom)
What differentiates your teaching from what students could learn on their own? Your personality, your experience, and your stories. These sessions will establish the power that stories have to increase your students' buy-in, comprehension, and retention. We'll cover four levels of storytelling that each can progressively elevate your teaching. Each of the two sessions below will cover the same content, so you can register for either one as it fits your schedule. Both sessions can be attended in-person or on Zoom.
- Monday, November 1st at 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
- Thursday, November 4th at 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Creating Graphics to Enhance Your Teaching (In-Person and via Zoom)
Adding an image to your teaching can increase information retention from 10% to 65% - that's astounding. But, there's a caveat: not just any image will improve retention. In these sessions, we'll review the science of "multimedia learning" and discuss the principles of image design to enhance learning. We will then explore a few tools that will assist you in the creation of graphics, including Canva, Snagit, and Adobe Spark. Each of the two sessions below will cover the same content, so you can register for either one as it fits your schedule. Both sessions can be attended in-person or on Zoom.
- Monday, November 15th at 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
- Thursday, November 18th at 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Drop-In Training (via Zoom)
There is no formal training program for our drop-in sessions. They are designed so instructors can pop in to ask quick questions at any time throughout the hour. Instructors are also welcome to attend the entire time and just ask questions as they work on creating their course content. Feel free to ask questions about Isidore, Zoom, Warpwire, and more.

Struggles & Successes Groups (via Zoom)
If we have learned anything from the pandemic, it’s that instructors are often the best source of support for each other. From the Department of English’s “E-Learning Development Groups” to the idea exchange through the FlexTeaching Listserv , we witnessed ingenious ideas and outstanding compassion through these faculty conversations. To that end, we would like to facilitate the creation of small, cross-disciplinary faculty groups that will meet for 30 minutes twice a month for the Fall 2021 semester. In these Struggles & Successes groups (which will be held over Zoom), participating instructors will have a space to celebrate each other’s teaching achievements and brainstorm ideas to address any challenges that may arise. Learn more about how these groups work in the registration link below.
